Today feels like the perfect day to return another native treasure to the Ź»Äina ā our beloved mÄmaki.
This beautiful plant, with its vibrant green leaves and deep cultural roots, has been patiently growing in its pot. But now, itās time. Time to let these young plants stretch their roots into the soil and flourish under the rains and sun of East Maui.
šŖ“ Why MÄmaki Matters
MÄmaki (Pipturus albidus) is more than just a plant ā itās a healer. Traditionally used in lÄŹ»au lapaŹ»au (Hawaiian herbal medicine), mÄmaki tea is known to:
Support blood pressure and circulation
Strengthen the immune system
Detoxify the body gently
Nourish with antioxidants and minerals
Itās caffeine-free, native to HawaiŹ»i, and has been cherished for generations by our kÅ«puna. When I drink mÄmaki, I feel grounded ā like Iām sipping on something sacred.
š± Why Weāre Planting Now
The rains have been steady, and the soil is soft and rich. Iāve been watching the way the mÄmaki leaves reach toward the morning light, and I know theyāre ready. Ready to become part of this land ā to join our Ź»ulu, our papayas, and all the plants in our living medicine garden.
Planting them in the ground today is not just about growing tea ā itās about growing a deeper connection to our place, our traditions, and our well-being.
š Looking Ahead
Iām excited to harvest our own mÄmaki leaves for tea, for market, and for sharing with our Ź»ohana and community. But for now, Iām pausing in gratitude for this simple act of planting. It reminds me how healing starts ā small, rooted, and full of promise.
Mahalo nui loa for being here with us on this journey of abundance and restoration. šæ
